September 2000 - April 2007

webMethods Inc., Sunnyvale, CA
SENIOR SOFTWARE SORCERER

On September 1, 2000, webMethods acquired Active Software.

Architected and implemented (> 95%) both the client and server portions of the webMethods (later Software AG) installer, a java based, multi-platform installer which delivers hundreds of individual components seamlessly from dozens of disparate, world-wide development teams using a wizard based installer client.

More details can be found here: Software AG Installer.

Prepared teaching materials and taught multiple classes on Software AG Installer development.

Managed, delivered, and maintained every outgoing product suite release.

November 1995 - September 2000

Active Software Inc., Santa Clara, CA
SOFTWARE SORCERER

As one of the founding members of Active Software, I performed a wide variety of tasks:

  • Release Engineering
Took a build process that was executed manually, and wrote scripts in expect and perl to completely automate nightly builds across 6 platforms (Solaris, IRIX, HP-UX, Windows NT, AIX, DEC UNIX). Verified and releasing every internal and external product build, as well as building and releasing patches.
  • Software Quality Assurance
The author of the complete stress test suite at Active Software. Designed, implemented and executed stress tests. Tested GUI applications, installation, and other parts of the product. Wrote a simple test harness.
  • Webmaster
Designed internal www pages for Active Software and managed internal and external www pages. Wrote scripts to produce reports on www activity on external www server.
  • Software development
One of three developers working on Visual Java, a GUI-builder which was later licensed to Sunsoft and incorporated into their product Java Workshop. Ported ActiveWeb install from InstallShield3 to InstallShield5. Developed UNIX (perl based) & Windows (InstallShield5 based) versions of the install portion of ActiveWorks, which consists of approximately 75 installable products. Internationalized and localized (translation was done externally) the InstallShield install to Japanese.
  • System administration
Initially provided all system administration support for Active Software, including NIS/DNS configuration, configuring a netscape mail server, setting up and managing e-mail accounts, managing hardware, writing support scripts to automate administration tasks, backing up company information, managing external WWW and FTP services, and setting up printing. Administered Solaris machines and x86 machines running Windows 95, Windows NT 3.51, and Windows NT 4.0.
June 1994 - November 1995

Sunsoft Inc., Mountain View, CA
SUPPORT ENGINEER FOR NEO

Initially provided support for all customers of NEO, and later acted as technical lead for the 4 person NEO back-line support team; managed 2 hardware labs and answered questions about all parts of the product. Often coded up examples in C++. Started newsgroup alt.os.solaris.neo, managed all NEO e-mail aliases. Assisted in teaching several classes on NEO and NEO support.

June 1993 - June 1994

Sunsoft Inc., Mountain View, CA
SQA ENGINEER FOR CDE (Common Desktop Environment)

Set up and managed test source tree; wrote scripts to interface with HP's source server in Corvallis; ran manual and automatic test suites; managed lab hardware; wrote over 40 tools and scripts to help developers use the testing environment; drove several quality issues.
